The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) is a global, independent not for profit organization. The ASC’s primary role is to manage the global standards for responsible aquaculture, which were developed by the WWF Aquaculture Dialogues. ASC works with aquaculture producers, seafood processors, retail and foodservice companies, scientists, conservation groups and consumers. They recognize and reward responsible aquaculture, promote best environmental and social choice when purchasing seafood, and contribute to transforming seafood markets towards sustainability.
The ASC Chain of Custody standard for seafood traceability ensures that the ASC ecolabel is only displayed on seafood from an ASC certified farm. If a farm is certified as meeting the ASC environmental standard for sustainable farming, use of the ASC ecolabel on seafood products is permitted only where there has been independent verification that the product originated from a certified farm. An independent certification against the Chain of Custody standard provides this verification. All parties that handle ASC product along the chain must be ASC Chain of Custody Certified in order for the product to continue to be ASC certified.
